But now that it is associated with Pesky, the number has returned to respectability and we even consider giving it to our first basemen. If you look at the right replay, it clearly shows that Mookie Wilson was almost at the bag when that grounder went through Buck's legs. I won't bother going into what the score was at the time. The lack of the managerial move that led to that moment. The implosion of the bullpen. Mostly because I know you're aware of all of that. People in Boston are too quick to say we don't need him. And while I am leery of anyone with the last name of Drew playing in Boston, having him here stabilizes the roster. In the aft...I have to say I agree with you, Dave.

In the aftermath of Jeter's announcement, there is a lot of hyberbole occuring.

Part of it is because he is deservedly a beloved Yankee and that warps perspective, for fans and homer journalists.

The other part of if it is that we are in the immediacy of his announcement, which is the very reason there is a 5-year waiting period on the Hall of Fame. Time allows us to gain perspective.

For example, when Don Mattingly retired, I felt he should have been a HoFer. Those 5 years in the 1980s were worthy of the Hall. But the Hall of Fame is based on an entire career, and with time I came to realize that as much as loved Mattingly, he just isn't a Hall of Famer ... despite his statistical similarity to Kirby Puckett.

Yes, Jeter is a Hall of Famer. Yes, he is one of the greatest shortstops ever. And yes, if you want to build a team of all-time greats and wanted him to be your shortstop, there would be nothing wrong with that ... you certainly would win a lot with him.

But he is not the greatest Yankee ever, not the greatest player ever and not the greatest shortstop ever.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13054517091231408114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454948283116207589.post-59420123956970189082014-02-11T15:11:41.576-05:002014-02-11T15:11:41.576-05:00Not sure that's all that relevant when he'...Not sure that's all that relevant when he's going up against a DH! In 2004, when he made the dive into the stands, he played 154 games.

Prior to coming to the Yankees, Teixeira had been on of the more durable players in the game, playing no fewer than 132 games in a season and playing in the full 162 in 2005 and '06. In his first three season with the Yankees, he played 156, 158 and 156 games.

Ellsbury, by comparison, played in only 18 games in 2010 because of because of the aforementioned collision with Adrian Beltre, who played 154 games that season. Els played in only 74 games in 2012 because of a separated shoulder (similar Jeter's '03 injury) sustained in a slide into second. Perhaps by trading Gardner, they can bring back a young outfielder who can provide that insurance.
